About the role

You will build the websites, apps and internal platforms our clients run their business on — front end to database, and the pipelines in between.

Every change you ship passes the same gates: tests, Core Web Vitals and WCAG 2.2 AA budgets in CI, and a human review. Coding assistants are part of the toolkit, and AI-proposed code gets exactly the same scrutiny as yours. You will also mentor mid-level engineers and help set the standards they learn from.

What you will do

  1. Ship features across a TypeScript front end and Node or Python services
  2. Hold Core Web Vitals (LCP ≤ 2.5 s, INP ≤ 200 ms, CLS ≤ 0.1) and WCAG 2.2 AA budgets in CI
  3. Review AI-proposed code with the same rigour as human code
  4. Design data models and APIs that another team can pick up without a meeting
  5. Mentor mid-level engineers through pairing and review

A typical week

  1. Building features

You write it with a coding assistant in the loop; nothing merges without tests and your own review of every line.

  2. Code review

Including AI-proposed changes, read with the same rigour as anyone’s.

  3. Design and data modelling

  4. Performance and accessibility budgets

What you bring

  • 6+ years building production web applications
  • Deep React or Next.js, plus one backend language in production
  • Testing discipline: unit, integration and end-to-end
  • Working knowledge of cloud deployment on AWS, GCP or Azure

Nice to have

  • Headless CMS or commerce platforms
  • Performance profiling at scale

Never a reason to rule anyone out. If you have most of the list above and none of this, apply.

Your first 90 days

  1. Days 1–30

Your first change in production on a client platform, reviewed and merged

  2. Days 31–60

Own a feature end to end, including its tests and its performance budget

  3. Days 61–90

Lead a technical design review and pair weekly with a mid-level engineer

A hand-drawn goal review on dot-grid paper: tallies for weeks one to eleven beside an assess-and-plan column, two pens resting on the page.
The plan is written down before your first day, and you review it with your lead as the weeks go by.

How we hire for this role

5 steps, and a reply after every one.

The steps for this role, set by its hiring lead. Timings are targets; when one slips, we tell you.

  1. Within 5 working days

    Step 1: Application read

An engineer reads it — your code and what you built count for more than the CV layout.

  2. Week 1 · 45 min

    Step 2: Technical conversation

Something you built, the trade-offs you made, and the role, level and band.

  3. Week 2 · 90 min

    Step 3: Pairing session

A small real problem in a real codebase, with an engineer. AI assistants allowed — tell us how you check them.

    Work sample · the brief
  4. Week 2 · 60 min

    Step 4: Design review

Sketch a system with two engineers and defend the choices.

  5. Week 3

    Step 5: Offer

In writing, with the level, the band and the start date.

What helps an application

  • A link to work you made, with your own part in it named.
  • One project you could talk through for half an hour.
  • If you used AI, a line on how you checked what it produced.
  • Plain words. We read for substance, not polish.

Adjustments. Extra time, questions in advance, captions, a different format — tell us on the form or by email. Asking never counts against you.
